What Is Pet Screen?

Pet screen is a heavy-duty, vinyl-coated polyester mesh designed to resist the everyday abuse that dogs and cats put on standard fiberglass screen. Standard 18×14 mesh tears under moderate claw pressure — pet screen is engineered to resist punctures, scratching, and the repetitive pushing that dogs do when they want to get through a door or panel.

Pet Screen vs. Standard Screen

  • Strength: Pet screen is approximately 7× stronger than standard fiberglass mesh
  • Material: Vinyl-coated polyester vs. standard PVC-coated fiberglass
  • Visibility: Slightly reduced visibility due to heavier weave — similar to standard screen
  • Cost: Approximately $1–2 more per square foot than standard mesh
  • Lifespan: Significantly longer in pet households — typically 2–3× the life of standard
  • Insect barrier: Maintains 18×14 mesh weave — same bug protection as standard

Is Pet Screen Worth the Extra Cost?

If you have one or more dogs that access the pool cage or lanai, the answer is almost always yes. A single panel repair on a screen that a 60-pound dog blows through regularly will cost you more over two years than the upfront premium of pet screen. We recommend installing pet screen in the lower 2–3 panels (where pets interact) and standard mesh in the upper panels as a cost-effective compromise.

Where We Install Pet Screen

We install pet screen on pool cage panels, lanai screens, screened porch panels, and screen doors throughout the Gulf Beaches. We can install it on all panels, or just in the high-traffic areas where your pets spend the most time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is pet screen worth the extra cost for Gulf Blvd homes?
Yes — if you have one or more dogs that access the pool cage or lanai. A single standard panel repair after a dog pushes through costs $75–$150. Pet screen costs $1–$2 more per square foot upfront but lasts 2–3× longer in pet households, making it the more economical choice over time.
Can you install pet screen on just some panels, not all?
Absolutely. A common approach is to install pet screen in the lower 2–3 panels where pets interact most, and keep standard mesh on the upper panels. This gives you pet resistance where it matters while keeping costs down.
Does pet screen block no-see-ums like standard screen does?
Pet screen uses an 18×14 mesh weave — the same as standard fiberglass screen — so it provides the same insect barrier. It does not block no-see-ums any better or worse than standard mesh. For no-see-um protection, you would need 20×20 mesh instead.
